Job Summary:
The Sleep Medicine Specialists is a hospital based outpatient clinic department of Mary Washington Healthcare. The Nurse Practitioner (NP) will work with physicians and technicians to provide care for patients with sleep disorders. This individual will conduct an assessment of physical, psycho-social, cognitive and functional components, develop a treatment plan, order and interpret diagnostic components of the plan, and prescribe non-pharmacologic and pharmacologic agents. Under minimal supervision, the NP will work closely and collaborate with physicians and other health care teams to provide high quality, efficient, integrated, continuous and cost-effective care to patients at MWHC. A licensed and credentialed NP provides diagnosis, treatment, consultation, and follow-up under the supervision of one or more physicians in the practice. The NP provides age and specialty appropriate medical care at the level of training achieved.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
- Independently execute duties with minimal physician supervision
- Evaluate and treat patients with sleep disorders
- Evaluate and treat follow-up patients referred by physicians
- Orders all sleep tests per American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) guidelines and other diagnostic tests accurately and in a timely manner
- Prescribes non-pharmacologic therapies and pharmacologic agents
- Provides relevant patient and family education; makes appropriate referrals to other professional and community agencies
- Evaluates the effectiveness of plan of care through documentation of patient outcomes, reassessment, and changes the plan as necessary to achieve mutually established goals.
- Interfaces with community agencies and other health care professionals as a member of an interdisciplinary, collaborative team to provide comprehensive care.
- Educates physicians, nurses, and other disciplines to assess and care for patients with sleep disorders
- Responsible for self-directed continuing education to include educational programs, participation in quality assurance and maintenance of certification according to law
- Supports appropriate research by identifying, defining and participating in outcome studies Identifies sleep research opportunities and/or replicates studies
- Meets all of the requirements of the practice agreement with the supervising physician under the regulations and requirements of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
- Communicates with patients in our practice via telephone, secure-email or postal mail regarding laboratory and test results
- Provide medication refills and coordinate follow-up appointments
- Effectively communicate with physicians, medical assistants, LPNs, office manager, and ancillary staff within our practice to provide coordinated medical care to patients with sleep disorders
- Establish and maintain communication lines with other healthcare practitioners, especially Primary Care Providers, Cardiologist, Endocrinologist, Hospitalist, and ENT within our physician's network
- To provide patient education regarding lifestyle changes, nutrition and exercise in coordination with staff
- Provide coverage for our physicians while they are on vacation, at CME conferences, and other personal and administrative leave
- Participate in monthly Journal Club, staff meetings and assigned CME activities
- Analyze new knowledge gained from conferences, workshops, professional literature, or "hands-on training" and assimilate this knowledge into clinical practice

- Fully comply with HIPAA regulations and adherence to the American Nurse Association Code of Ethics and the State of Virginia Nurse Practice Act
- Possess adequate ability to assess the need for foreign language interpretation and access the appropriate resources to provide this interpretation as well as providing care in a culturally appropriate manner via a foreign language interpreter
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point, and proficient with clinical search engines to access latest practice guidelines, evolving scientific knowledge, as well as relevant evidence-based medical and nursing literature
- Other clinical and administrative duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- Valid RN License from Virginia or reciprocal compact state required.
- Valid Adult Nurse Practitioner License, with prescriptive authority from Virginia required
- Valid registration with DEA required.
- AHA BLS Provider CPR required at hire
- Master's degree in Nursing (MSN) from an accredited school required
- Successful completion of a nurse practitioner education program that holds a national accreditation acceptable to the Board of Nursing and/or Medicine required
