The incumbent works in the Pulmonary Department of the Medical Care Line at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center. The incumbent will be responsible for delivery of care to Veterans for a Home Based Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program, modeled after traditional outpatient pulmonary rehabilitation services. The incumbent is responsible for the assessment, selecting and implementation of an exercise treatment plan in the Home-Based Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program. Duties may include but are not limited to: Provides patient education in the form of disease management, individual exercise plan development, stress-management, nutritional counseling, smoking cessation counseling or referral, medication compliance and overall guidance to patients in how to adapt a healthy lifestyle. Interprets physician treatment plan and evaluates patients using standard and nonstandard procedures and techniques appropriate for diagnosis to establish a baseline function Implements an exercise treatment plan based on analysis of initial patient assessment and chart review. Provides education to maximize the patient's awareness of the importance of regular exercise, and develops specific and individualized exercise programs. Administers a variety of therapeutic respiratory therapy treatments. Monitors patient use of home equipment and their physical response to exercise, including documentation of adverse events as necessary. Sets up and monitors respiratory equipment such as invasive and noninvasive ventilators, end tidal CO2 monitors, oxygen delivery devices, re- breathers and oximetry monitors. Performs bedside diagnostic tests to assess the respiratory status of patients. Under general guidance performs Advanced Airway placement of LMA placement or may assist physicians and full performance RRT's in placing more advanced artificial airways into patients as required. During cardiac arrests, under guidance initiates artificial ventilation using mouth-to-mask techniques or a manual ventilation bag to restore patient's heartbeat and maintain ventilation. During transport of patients, maintains clearance of airway, monitors vital signs, and performs cardiopulmonary resuscitation when necessary. Performs routine respiratory therapy treatment to hospital ward patients such as administering oxygen and therapeutic aerosols, and incentive spirometry, chest physical therapy. Draws & analysis arterial blood gases and uses oximeters to determine the level of oxygen. Records treatment, findings and progress pertinent to patient care.
